Caselake: Tactical Inventory Fishing with Guns

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to combine the relaxing activity of fishing with tactical inventory management à la Resident Evil 4 and the thrill of shooting your catches? Well, Caselake, Munro's game prototype, offers you exactly that and much more.

Available on itch.io, Caselake presents itself as an innovative proposal that challenges conventions. In this game, you'll venture into a mysterious lake with a clear mission: to fish. But not with the typical rod and hook, but with an arsenal at your disposal to secure your catches!

The Premise: Tactical Inventory Fishing

The heart of Caselake lies in its "Tactical Inventory Fishing" mechanic. Once a fish bites the hook, there's no time for patience; it's time to pull out your guns and shoot your target. But the fun doesn't stop there. Fish, as well as ammo and other tools, must fit into your oversized briefcase, mimicking the iconic inventory management of games like Resident Evil 4 or the aesthetic of Jack and Casie. Every space counts, and how you organize your catches and equipment is crucial to maximizing your profits.

First Impressions and Gameplay

As an early jam prototype, the game is quite straightforward. You start by activating your fishing rod. When a fish bites, it's your time to act with your weapons. Reloading is intuitive: simply drag matching ammo over the gun. Once you've filled your briefcase (or run out of ammo), you can return to shore to sell your fish, buy new weapons and upgrades, and prepare for your next expedition. However, the game reminds you: "Some things are better thrown back."

Inspirations and Visual Style

Caselake draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of titles, including:

The game features a charming PICO-8 pixel art style, giving it a retro yet distinctive feel. The combination of fishing, Tetris-style inventory, and a touch of "survival horror" (or at least its resource management aesthetic) makes it a unique experience. The sound design, with music by John McKinnon and tracks from Gruber, perfectly complements the game's atmosphere.

Game Status and Future

Currently, Caselake is an early prototype created for a game jam, meaning that balance and content are still under development. Player feedback already points out small bugs and areas for improvement, which is common in early development phases. However, its fresh concept and addictive gameplay make it a gem to follow.

If you're looking for a different gaming experience, one that merges genres in an unexpected way, don't hesitate to try Caselake. Get ready for the most tactical fishing you've ever experienced!
